Diseases and Infections of the Eye

Understanding Eye Diseases and Infections

Your eyes are delicate and complex organs, and maintaining their health is crucial for overall well-being. At National Vision Center, we provide comprehensive diagnosis and treatment for a wide range of eye diseases and infections. Early detection and intervention are key to preserving your vision and preventing further complications.

Common Eye Diseases

Glaucoma

Glaucoma is a group of eye diseases that damage the optic nerve, often due to increased intraocular pressure (IOP). It can lead to irreversible vision loss and blindness if left untreated.

  • Symptoms: Often asymptomatic in early stages. Later stages may include blurred vision, halos around lights, and peripheral vision loss.
  • Treatment: Eye drops, laser therapy, or surgery.

Cataracts

Cataracts are the clouding of the eye's lens, which blurs vision. They are a common age-related condition.

  • Symptoms: Blurred vision, glare, difficulty seeing at night, faded colors.
  • Treatment: Surgery to replace the clouded lens with an artificial lens.

Macular Degeneration

Macular degeneration affects the central part of the retina (macula), responsible for sharp, detailed vision. It can cause vision loss in the center of the visual field.

  • Symptoms: Blurred central vision, distorted vision, difficulty recognizing faces.
  • Treatment: No cure, but treatments like medication, laser therapy, and lifestyle changes can slow progression.

Diabetic Retinopathy

Diabetic retinopathy is a complication of diabetes that affects the blood vessels in the retina. It can lead to vision loss and blindness.

  • Symptoms: Blurred vision, floaters, dark spots in vision.
  • Treatment: Laser therapy, injections, or surgery.

Common Eye Infections

Conjunctivitis (Pink Eye)

Conjunctivitis is an inflammation of the conjunctiva, the clear membrane that covers the white of the eye and the inside of the eyelids. It can be caused by viruses, bacteria, or allergies.

  • Symptoms: Redness, itching, burning, discharge.
  • Treatment: Depends on the cause; may include eye drops or ointments.

Dry Eye Syndrome

While not an infection, dry eye can make you more susceptible to infections and cause discomfort. It occurs when your eyes don't produce enough tears or the tears are of poor quality.

  • Symptoms: Burning, stinging, gritty sensation, blurred vision.
  • Treatment: Artificial tears, lifestyle changes, prescription medications.
